Ciara gets branded

I've been a very bad blogger lately! I promise to get some more pics of what's been happening around Waterford Estate this weekend. The weather forecast is for clear, sunny days which certainly makes a change from the grotty weather we've had lately. In the meantime, here are some pics of the horses taken a month ago.

Ciara was branded on Wednesday afternoon. She was freeze branded which involves the horse being sedated, and the branding irons being cooled using liquid nitrogen. The super-cooled brands are then held on the horse's skin for 12 seconds. The process damages the hair follicles which causes the hair to grow back white, providing a contrast to the horse's coat. It's done primarily for identification purposes, and provides an easy reference to the horses's breed and age.

Looking decidedly sleepy
Offside brand, 8 over 0 (8th foal registered, born in 2010)
Nearside brand, Shamrock over NZ (the brand of the NZ Irish Draught Horse Society)
Looking to Mack for sympathy
Chewing on Mack
Still looking dopey
