Following on from the sheep shelter, Chris' next project has been the construction and installation of the UV water filtration system that will be connected to the concrete tank. This will enable us to drink the rain water that is being collected off the shed roof.
We currently draw all our water from a fairly shallow bore. Although the water is free from bacteria, the level of nitrates is double the acceptable "safe" level, and it is fairly acidic. It is safe to drink once it has been filtered, but the under-bench filter that we have is expensive to run as it requires changing relatively often. In addition, having a low PH means the water is quite corrosive on the metal fittings and appliances.
Chris has spent countless hours on the internet researching construction of various water system. He has decided that a 1 micron particle filter combined with a Sterilight UV light to be the best system given our current setup. He assures me that it isn't as complicated as it looks. Basically, the system consists of a pre-filter that takes out the particles (the light blue cylinder), then the water passes through the horizontal chamber where it is blasted by UV light to destroy the micro-organisms. The water is then distributed to either the troughs, the Cottage or the shed.

The system is not quite up and running yet, but it's not too far from being completed. Once assembly and testing has been completed, the system will be tucked away out of sight under a stainless steel bench.
